How much does it cost to drive the Pan-American Highway? Final update!

We finally made it home!  And in one piece!  After selling the truck and camper in Chile, we spent a few more days in Punta Arenas and then made the long trek back home to Seattle.  Only three flights and 19hrs of flight time...

For the entire trip, we spent a grand total of $32,441 for an average of $154/day.  In short, with more camping and moving slower, the per day average would have come way down.  However, travelling somewhat quickly (7mo) and wanting to spend some time not camping (hotel or Airbnb), this budget felt entirely comfortable.

A few highlights from our final countries of Chile and Argentina.

  • Chile ended up being our most expensive country for filling up with fuel.  We saw an average of $4.65 USD and had our most expensive fill-up of the trip in the middle of nowhere on the Carretera Austral, $5.30 USD!  It was totally worth it though.

  • We heard horror stories about how expensive camping was in Chile, however, we only got charged once.  There was plenty of wild camping and interestingly, even in the National Parks, they very rarely collected for camping, or even entering the park...

  • Lastly, in both Chile and Argentina, food prices were almost exactly the same as in the U.S.  However, it was well worth it to finally have grocery stores that had amazing selections, including delicious wine, cheeses, and meats.

In the end, over seven months of travel and more than 17k miles, we are so glad we took the plunge and hit the road.

For anyone considering the trip, we'd highly recommend it.  You can spend more money than us, or way less money, but no matter how you travel, it's an incredible adventure.
